A Very Chaotic Ranking Of The Eras Tour's Surprise Songs Mashups
Hey kids, Surprise Songs are fun!
I think we can all agree that the best part of the Eras Tour is the Acoustic Set. Every night, Taylor plays 2 different Surprise Songs: one on guitar and one on piano.
During that 2023 US leg of the tour, Taylor used to play 2 full songs and that is it. However, in 2024 something changed. Taylor started doing mashups, VERY chaotic mashups that kept everyone on edge.
Today I attempted to rank the mashups. And let me tell you, that was not easy. Taylor has so many good songs and so many mashups made me question her sanity.
Just note that these are my opinions, and my opinions on Surprise Songs will not be changed easily. You’re welcome to come after me I would more than love to fight for my mashups and roast the ones I hate.
Top 10 Worst Mashups
Amsterdam N1 - Guilty As Sin? x Untouchable
When she started playing Guilty As Sin? I was in utter shock. That is one of the best songs on TTPD and I am forever rooting for it to be a single. However, Taylor misunderstood that Guilty As Sin? is a song that deserves to be mashed up with a good song. When she started playing Untouchable there was not one person in the crowd singing, and I sat there watching the livestream thinking “No Taylor, we don’t do that”. I get that there is some sort of irony here, but Guilty As Sin? deserves better!!
Cardiff N1 - This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things x I Forgot That You Existed
Sometimes, Taylor wants to be unserious. And that is fine, that is cool, we love unserious sticking-her-tongue-out-awkwardly-dancing-fun-mashups-Taylor. However, when she decided to play a fun silly mashup, that mashup should be both dumb and poetic. TIWWCHNT x IFTYE was just dumb. I’m a proud IFTYE hater. It’s my least favorite song off Lover and I generally don’t like it. TIWWCHNT on the other hand is my favorite unhinged silly song, and it had SO MUCH potential! This mashup was also not delivered well vocally, and I don’t like it.
I honestly got second-hand embarrassment from how quiet the crowd was when she started singing INTHAF. I’m not an INTHAF enjoyer so I would’ve probably reacted the same way. Dorothea is a great song and I love it, and I get the fact that it’s Bestie Mashup but I didn’t like it. Something about it just feels off to me, a little bit forced even.
You don’t do things like this to Our Song. You don’t mash up one of the greatest songs of all time with a song that people barely know. I am totally okay with Jump Then Fall, but I think Our Song deserved better. For some reason I really want her to sing Our Song x Mine. I could be SO good!
I don’t have a lot to say about this mashup because Closure is my least fav off Evermore (even though it’s still great) and APGH is my least fav off Debut. This mashup felt very random and unrelated. I remember watching it and just looking at the screen confused.
I want to clarify: I LOVE This Is Me Trying. I LOVE Labyrinth. But this mashup had personally offended me. She played it on Gelsenkirchen N2, the last show Travis was in attendance before he left for training camp. This wicked woman somehow decided to make This Is Me Trying a love song, and I find that unacceptable. TIMT is the teenage girls’ anthem, it’s a song about pain and trying to find your place. Come on, Taylor, don’t use our song to show off the fact that you have a boyfriend and we are stressed about school. We don’t do that, that is more offensive than the Vienna statement.
I am the #1 ICFH hater. I can’t listen to this song. I can’t with the sirens I can’t with the weird background noises I can’t with the lyrics I just can’t. That is a very rare example of a Taylor Swift song that is just BAD. That song should’ve stayed in the vault. Sparks Fly on the other hand, is my baby, it deserves better. It deserves New Romantics. Justice for Sparks Fly.
Robin is another song that I just don’t like. The lyrics keep repeating themselves, there is no vibe (not even a sad vibe) and it’s way too long. I understand that this is the sweet girlhood mashup but I don’t like it. The crowd was so quiet when she sang it, and I quickly felt the people’s enthusiasm fading. It was just a weak mashup made out of two average songs.
No Taylor, no. We don’t do that to TLGAD. We don’t do that to the best song ever written. Why Run? Why is the worst song off Red paired with one of the best songs in history? Why couldn’t it be The Bolter?! It could have been so amazing, but Taylor just ruined it. I was personally offended when I heard her singing “Give me the keys…”. It wasn’t good.
We don’t do that to loml. We don’t do that to my favorite song. I can’t verbalize how much I love it. It was my depression song after my show got canceled. It is everything. Don’t You, on the other hand, is just another average song that we don’t really care about. loml should only be mashed up with Exile/Tolerate It/You’re Losing Me. These are the only songs that loml deserves. This mashup hurt me, it offended me, it was insensitive and it showed how much Ms Swift needs a Surprise Song counselor. That counselor should be me.
Top 10 Best Mashups
This is one of the most iconic mashups of all time. It’s beautiful and I will never forget the first time she sang it. I. Was. Gagged. “Slvt!” will forever be my favorite 1989 song, and False God is incredible. This mashup is everything.
It was the 100th show of the Eras Tour. We all thought Taylor was going to announce something. Instead, she played this incredible mashup and I fell off my chair. Two of the best angry songs in history mashed up. She was angry and she had every right to be. It was the first show in England, and she was roasting Joe and I was so happy about it.
Why does nobody talk about how good this mashup is??? It’s literally everything to me. She sang it so wholeheartedly and you could see how happy she was. Now THAT’S HOW you dedicate a Surprise Song to your boyfriend (no more TIMT x Labyrinth!!). In addition to that, the transition is genius. She did such an incredible play on the lyrics and I loved it. I loved every bit of it.
The first mashup of all time. The most iconic mashup of all time. What else do I have to say? I mean, it’s not even a mashup at this point it’s just how the song goes. We all know that before the bridge of IION comes the bridge of OOTW. This is the Harry Styles mashup, the my-ex-doesn’t-know-how-to-drive mashup, and it’s literally perfect.
I will never forget that day. I was at my friend’s farewell party and decided to come back home earlier because Eras Tour comes first. And then she played it. It was my dream mashup at the time, everyone knew it. I am the #1 Mary’s Song and So High School stan. I always knew that someday they would be mashed up. I cried a lot, a lot a lot. Too much. But hey, I wasn’t the only one bawling her eyes out! Travis Kelce himself cried with me! That mashup is another great example of how you dedicate a song to your boyfriend, this is the kind of mashup I live for!!
I remember Warsaw N3 like it was yesterday. It was supposed to be the last show before the Vienna shows RIP and I sat in my room and watched, with a list of (a lot of) songs that I wanted to get as Surprise Songs. Exile was the first one, and then she played it. I cried for 40 minutes and called my friend who was supposed to come to the show with me. Objectively, this mashup was so good vocally and it was another classic Joe Alwyn roast. Simply incredible.
Another dream Surprise Song of mine. It will forever remain iconic. Something about it just feels so personal: Long Live being a song about the fans and YOYOK becoming the national Swiftie anthem, it’s just the sweetest thing in the world.
I claimed that mashup so long ago, when imgonnagetyouback was just released. I remember watching the livestream with my friends and saying “If she does imgonnagetyouback and Dress tonight…” It’s one of the best mashups in history. The vocals were so on point and the storyline was incredible.
The iconic bridge mashup, made out of my favorite and third favorite bridges of all time. DBATC and Hits Different are two of the best songs in Taylor’s entire discography, everything from the storytelling to the vocals to the vibe is just so good.
There was always a part of me that feared the day Taylor Alison Swift would play The Bolter. However never in my wildest dreams did I think she would mash it up with Getaway Car. This will forever remain the greatest mashup of all time, it’s a mashup about running away and bolting. It’s a mashup that contains 2 of the most iconic Taylor Swift bridges. It’s a mashup that contains my all time favorite Taylor Swift song. So, I think we can all agree we were all just dreaming and it never ACTUALLY happened!
